If your dates are flexible at all, this is the easiest money you will save on a move. Weekday moves are cheaper, easier to book, and usually finish faster — and the reasons have nothing to do with how hard anyone works.
The short answer
Move on a weekday, mid-month, if you possibly can. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the quietest days in the industry.
Why weekends cost more
Nearly everyone wants Saturday. Demand is concentrated into two days, which pushes rates up and books the best crews out weeks ahead. If you want a Saturday at the end of the month in summer, you need to book a long way in advance and accept the price.
Weekdays are the opposite: more availability, better choice of arrival time, and more room in the schedule if your job runs long.
The practical advantages nobody mentions
- Buildings are staffed. Management offices are open on weekdays, so freight elevators get booked, Certificates of Insurance get approved and problems get solved. On a Sunday there may be nobody to ask.
- Many Chicago buildings restrict weekend moves outright, or limit them to a narrow window.
- Utilities and internet connect on weekdays. Moving in on a Saturday often means no internet until Monday.
- Traffic is more predictable. Avoid rush hours and a weekday is easier to plan than a weekend with events, street festivals or game-day closures.
The dates to avoid
The last and first few days of any month are the busiest in moving, because that is when leases turn over. Combine end-of-month with a summer Saturday and you are competing with the largest possible number of people for the same crews and the same elevators.
In Chicago, the last day of April and the first of May, and the same around September, are especially heavy.
When a weekend is the right call
Sometimes it is. If you cannot take time off, a weekend move that you are present and unhurried for beats a weekday one you are stressed and distracted through. For offices and retail, weekends are usually better, because the point is to avoid trading hours entirely.
What about winter?
A Chicago winter move is genuinely cheaper — it is the off season, and rates and availability both reflect it. The trade-offs are daylight, snow and ice. If you plan for a shorter working day and clear and salt the paths at both ends, the savings are real.
